The Woodpecker in Derby is proof that you should never judge a book by its cover. This unassuming pub, just outside the city centre, serves what might be the best curry in town [citation:4, 9]. It's an "Indian pub" serving food that's more authentic and traditional than your average takeaway. The lamb desi curry is absolutely delicious . The mixed grill is also a standout—the portion size is unbelievable and great value . The staff are generally friendly, though service can be a tad slow when they're busy, and the atmosphere is good with Sky Sports on the TVs and a pool table [citation:4, 9]. Veg mix grill small in portion size for the price. Soya chunks need some tikka marinade. Don't come with any mint sauce or chilli sauce when you collect or order for a delivery. Generally, prices, quality and portion size is inferior to Fradley Arms.

This was my first visit to the Woodpecker meeting friends and a bite to eat. I had not heard if this establishment but was told that the Indian style find was delicious. That it was! If you visit the Woodpecker you wont be disappointed. Service was good but we all I Rendered at the same time and our find arrived it would seem when it was ready. This wasn't a real issue though as we all enjoyed the location, food and company. The only odd thing was that during our meal, they had a quiz in the dining area. This was loud and intruded into our conversations. We finished our find and replicated to a quieter area of the pub. This wouldn't however put me if a further visit. A couple of years ago I tried a curry here and it was gorgeous. It’s not as nice anymore. The curries are now a lazy curry base gravy. Blitzed up onion and veg another just chuck a few spices in at the end. A chicken karahi shouldn’t be brown and all base gravy. Atmosphere and service is brilliant. The staff are lovely but don’t expect a well made traditional curry. It’s a cheap cheat version now.

Great food and a superbly nice venue. Staff are friendly and approachable. I never thought that in a million years that such a pub would be tranformed into such a wonderful venue and be as successful as it is. The food is up there with the best there is.
